What is the scheme?
The National Portal for Transgender Persons was started in 2020 by the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment. On this portal, transgender persons can apply online from home for a transgender certificate and identity card. The District Magistrate (DM) issues the certificate, and it is valid all over India.

When will I get the card? Who can apply?
Applying is completely free, and you do not need to visit any office. After district verification, the certificate and ID card usually come within 30 days. Transgender persons, including the kinnar, hijra, aravani and jogta communities, can apply. The card helps you get benefits of schemes like SMILE (Support for Marginalised Individuals for Livelihood and Enterprise) and change your name in official documents.
How to check your status
- Open https://transgender.dosje.gov.in and click “TG Certificate & ID Card”.
- If you are new, Register and create your login ID.
- Log in, fill the form and upload your photo, address proof, ID proof and affidavit (Form-2, in the Download tab).
- Log in again to see your application status. If there is a delay, file a complaint under Grievance.
If you cannot fill the form yourself, visit your nearest Social Welfare Department office or a CSC. Helpline: 14427 (Monday to Friday, 10 AM to 5 PM).
Please note: the transgender law was amended in 2026. It provides for a medical board recommendation before the certificate is issued. The Central Government has told the Supreme Court that cards already issued will remain valid. Check the latest process on the portal or at the DM office.
Conclusion
An official proof of identity is your right. Apply today, and share this with everyone who needs it. One share can make someone’s life easier.
